IS ONLINE COUNSELLING EFFECTIVE?

You’ve probably heard of online counselling and perhaps you’ve been skeptical. We get that. Counselling is about connecting with a skilled provider who can truly help you heal and move onward and upward in your life. We hope this page will give you the information you need to decide if online counselling is right for you.

Online counselling has been scientifically proven since the late 1990’s to be effective for treating mental health issues. Yes, online counselling has been around since the start of the internet (not just since “covid”).  But virtual therapy has skyrocketed in popularity since the development of highly efficient platforms such as ZoomFaceTimeJane.appDoxy.me and many others. 

Online counselling is so convenient for people with busy lives, or even those with limiting disabilities – this is a way that you can get access to the quality of counsellor and specialist that you need, without having to make the effort of an outing, or drive miles away, or settle for someone local who doesn’t quite hold the skills or experience that you need.

Research has shown NO difference in online counselling results compared to in-person counselling results. Wild, right? The amazing news is that our team at FreeMind therapy can attest to this. HOW DOES ONLINE COUNSELLING WORK?

On the day of your online counselling session with FreeMind Therapy, a unique Jane.App link will automatically be emailed to you, 30min prior.  This link will lead you right to your video session waiting room.  Your therapist will “admit” you when they are ready.  It’s that simple! 

If you are a couple or family taking part in separate locations, just forward the same session link to your counterpart.

For the best experience, use headphones, with a computer or tablet.  Additionally, we strongly recommend using the Google Chrome browser to avoid glitches during our online counselling.  However, many people use their smart phone to attend sessions, especially if they are having a session in the middle of a workday, in their car, or don’t have access to a computer.

STILL SKEPTICAL ABOUT ONLINE COUNSELLING?

We 100% understand if you’re feeling unsure.  If you are going to go the online counselling route, we recommend you do your research, get a referral from a trusted source, or book a free consultation without having to pay. 

It is true that there are a growing number of “drive-through therapy” companies out there like BetterHelp, 7Cups, and more, who require pre-payment or membership fees – beware of this.  These types of online counselling companies thrive on beginner therapists who are struggling to find work, or minimally skilled therapists who are unable to build a good reputation on their own.  Most therapists in these companies can barely make a living wage – the truth is that you get what you pay for when it comes to therapy.  These companies are numbers-driven rather than client-care or outcomes driven.

TIPS FOR AN OPTIMAL ONLINE COUNSELLING SESSION

To ensure maximum use of time during online counselling with your therapist, here are some tips:

  • Download the Google Chrome browser (for any laptop or phone). Safari is okay for iPhones only.
  • Ensure your browser’s audio and video are enabled.
  • Ensure you have a quiet and confidential place, with no interruptions.
  • Ensure your device is fully charged or plugged in.
  • Headphones are recommended for the best experience in online counselling (but not required).
  • Try to be hands-free as certain types of therapy may require closing your eyes or focusing.
  • Sit upright (no laying down).
  • If you are a couple or family in the same room, please sit a slight distance from the screen so your therapist can see your upper bodies
  • Have good wifi, or if you’re out in your car, turn off your wifi and use data for a stronger connection.
  • Ensure your wifi is NOT being used by others for simultaneous video streaming (this will decrease the quality of our video).
