WHAT IS DEPRESSION COUNSELLING?

Depression counselling is often sought when there is a persistent experience of low mood which can impact us in many ways both emotionally and physically.  It can impact our social interaction, which can result in isolation from others or the outside world.

On the other hand, depression also can be difficult to spot, as people can tend to hide their depressive symptoms until they are in a safe space or at home. Speaking to someone for depression counselling can be an important step to healing.

Depression can present during a specific life event, trauma, death/loss, major change, or difficulty, and then resolve on its’ own.  Other times depression can be chronic, present a chemical imbalance and last for years on some level or another, eventually impacting every aspect of life.

Counselling for Counsellors

From a brain-based perspective, depression is the result of a pre-existing thought or feeling that exists within us, that has not been addressed or resolved.  The root of it could be guilt, shame, anger, anxiety, or a troubling idea/thought about ourselves or the world.

Thoughts and feelings are designed to cause us to take an action or do a behaviour.  When these things are not addressed, no action is taken, it can lead to a hopeless, helpless experience which can lead us straight to depression.

Getting to the root of the issue through self-reflection or depression counselling is key, in order to relieve depression symptoms.

SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

It is expected that someone with depression be experiencing at least five of the following symptoms for at two weeks or more, with either mood or loss of interest being one of them:

  • Feelings of sadness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Change in appetite or weight
  • Fatigue or lowered energy
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • A slowing of thoughts or
  • movements
  • Suicidal thoughts.

HOW TO HEAL FROM DEPRESSION

There are many ways to address depression.  People seek social support, go to their doctor for medication, and even try to simply ride it out.

However, these methods don’t usually get to the root of the issue and depression may always linger or return.  That’s why with depression, it’s key to understand what is going on within the mind and clear up the underlying cause of the depression.  Sometimes this can be a challenge, and that’s where therapy comes in.

There are so many therapeutic approaches to addressing depression, such as traditional talk therapy, psycho-analytic therapy, internal family systems therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and also some newer approaches such as somatic therapy, EMDR, and Rapid Resolution Therapy.  Many therapists combine various approaches to suit the presenting needs of the client at hand.

At FreeMind Therapy, all of our therapists are experienced with depression counselling using various approaches including Rapid Resolution Therapy.  We would be more than happy to meet with you to get you on the road to feeling better.
